Not-so-formal Bio

Greetings,

My name is Anastasia Ansel, mostly known as Ana (pronounced Ah-Na) or Anabun or Bunbun.

I have always been drawn to art since a very young age. It gives me such pleasure to see the end results of my work while so many other profession offers very little visual acknowledgement. When somebody likes my art, I can immediately see it in their eyes, and that in itself is the greatest reward. Ceramic art in particular is limitless, and it allows me to create 3D footprints of life as each one reminds me of how, why, when, and where it becomes.

To me, clay always has its way of dictating what it wants to be. My decorating style naturally carries characteristics of those in the Art Nouveau era, Art Deco era, and old children?s storybook. I enjoy experimenting all sorts of building, throwing, and decorating styles, with my top 2 being Sgraffito and Mishima. The former allows me to carve away and be free, while the latter constrict my movement in such exact manner. I find beauty in both despite the contradiction, primarily because my goal has always been to create a vessel that the user will love tactilely and visually, regardless their preference of order or chaos. I consider a piece successful when I achieve a perfectly complex simplicity, as well as when I managed to combine conflicting techniques to appear compatible.

In my humble opinion, there is no right or wrong in art and it shall always be what you dreamt it to be.

A bit of information in regards to my creations:

Each piece is either thrown on pottery wheel, or hand-built, or combination of both. I do not use patterns or templates for my pots which makes it very difficult to reproduce something. However, I believe that each one of my piece deserves to be unique, as we all are. Even identical twins are not exactly the same, so why my pots should? Everything I made (with exception of Ugly Duckling, Peon, and Little Bo Riding Pigs under NFS section) is freehanded straight unto the pot on greenware stage. The 3 mentioned in NFS were decorated on bisque stage and therefore pencil sketching was an option as a rough draft before painting. I do except commission work if you have something particular in mind, so feel free to send me an email at anabunpottery@gmail.com.
